  1. What a good idea, money circulates again and again. I'm in awe.

Maybe ozone strengthens and energizes pine bark beetles? And helps them spread the pathogen that kills the trees. Or strengthens the pathogen?

  2. Hey Catman -

If you watch the MSNBC video (number 2, about trees) he shows that the natural defense of trees to the bark beetle is to produce a sap that pushes them out, preventing (all) of them from burrowing into the bark.

So, my guess is cumulative exposure to ozone, and years of loosing needles, reduces the ability of the pine tree to produce the protective sap.

There is now solid evidence that it takes far more maple sap to boil down to produce the same amount of marketable syrup. There is no question that ozone causes internal physiological changes in plants as well as topical symptoms on foliage and needles.

Ozone literally eats away at the waxy coating on foliage, enabling pathogens and insects to attack.

  3. Now that you're a guest blogger and all, thanks for replying. Thanks for visiting Manhattan.

And I was just sort of kidding about ozone strengthening the bugs. They didn't evolve around ozone either.
